Gurukulas:


A 'gurukula' (Sanskrit guru "teacher" or "master"; kul domain, from kula, "extended family") is a type of school in India, residential in nature, with pupils shishya living near the guru. In a gurukul, shishyas learn from the guru and help the guru in his day-to-day life, including the carrying out of mundane chores such as agriculture, gau seva or service to cows, washing clothes, cooking, etc. Typically, a guru does not receive any fees from the shishyas studying with him. At the end of his studies, a shishya offers the guru dakshina before leaving the "gurukul" or ashram. Did you know that they are Gurukulas in India at this time too? Did you know that these Gurukulas do not charge any fees for the learning?



Did you know that Vedas are said to be without a beginning, not of human origin, have been directly revealed and what was heard? Did you know that Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda are the four branches of Vedas?


Did you know that one of the primary Upanishads, Taittiriya Upanishad, has given us Shikshavalli which is the quintessence of education? Did you know that this valli covers the limbs of Vedas or the Vedangas including Shiksha, Vyaakarana, Kalpa, Nirukta, Chandas and Jyotisha? Did you know that Vedas have four further upaangas or appendices called Ayurveda, Arthasaastra, Dhanur Veda and Gaadharva Veda?


Did you know that Shiksha or Education is considered the nose and the lungs of the Vedas? Did you know Vyaakarana or Grammar is considered the mouth of the Vedas? Did you know Chandas or metric compositions is considerd the feet of the Vedas?



Did you know that Nirukta is the dictionary and considered the ears of the Vedas? Did you know that Jyotisha or Vedic Astrology is considered the eye of the Vedas? Did you know that the Kalpa is the action of the Vedas and is considered the arms of the Vedas?


Did you know that the Taittiriya also propounds the theory that the human existence is in five sheaths? Did you know that the Panca Kosha existence or the five layered existence is brought out in Bhruguvalli of Taittiriya?


Another primary Upanishad, the Mundaka Upanishad, deals with Para Vidya and Apara Vidya. Did you know that the knowledge that experiential knowledge that leads to Self Realization is called Para Vidya while scholastic knowledge given in the Upanishads and everything else is called Apara Vidya or Knowledge of Material world?


Did you know that there are six systems of Hindu philosophy called shatdarshanas? Did you know these are Samkhya, Yoga, Nyaya, Vaisesika, Mimamsa and Vedanta? Did you know that only Yoga and Vedanta continue to exist today?
